Velvet Splendour is Goldfield & Banks' Australian mimosa tribute, launched in 2019 and created by perfumer Wessel-Jan Kos — inspired by the mimosa (wattle) trees bursting into bloom in the Flinders Ranges. It opens with radiant mandarin and effervescent aldehydes, delivering a sparkling, almost champagne-like quality that immediately sets it apart from conventional floral fragrances. The aldehydic lift is present but refined — not soapy or vintage in a heavy-handed way, but bright and airy. The heart is all about Australian mimosa absolute — abundantly honeyed, vaguely green and gently spicy, supported by orange blossom absolute and jasmine sambac. The Australian wattle note here is noticeably different from European mimosa — richer, woodier, with subtle fruity undertones that give it a distinctive character. The base of Australian sandalwood, patchouli, and creamy tonka bean adds warmth and sensuality, with soft leather and opoponax lending depth. Longevity is quite good — most wearers report around 6 hours on skin, with moderate sillage that stays close but noticeable. Community comparisons consistently land on Chanel No. 5 and Opium, Coco — a heady aldehydic white floral with fluffy powder and a rich wood/leather/patchouli baseline, old school but done in a modern way. It leans traditionally feminine on many skin types, though officially unisex. A polarizing but beautifully crafted fragrance — some find it dated, others find it a breath of fresh air — but as a decant it's a no-risk way to experience one of Australia's most acclaimed niche houses.
