Confident Oud is Hugo Boss's luxury offering from The Collection line, launched in 2021 — created by Dominique Ropion — and it's genuinely unlike anything else in the mainstream designer space. The fragrance officially features just two notes: bran and agarwood (oud), but the actual experience is far more complex. The opening hits immediately with a single malt whisky barrel scent — not boozy and fruity, but dry and malty — smelling quite literally like opening a new whiskey bottle. The first thing that hits the nose is a smoky, spicy, dry scent, and underneath, the oud blends in a gentle but distinctly noticeable way and is dust-dry. As it develops, it smells rich, like aged whisky resting in an old oak barrel — whisky, oak, almost no sweet. The base is a gentlemanly boozy smell that dries down to a whisky barrel woods scent. Performance is solid: projection is somewhere between strong and moderate — strong for 3-4 hours, then longevity is pretty much eternal but as a skin scent after around the 7-8 hour mark. Community comparisons most frequently land on Tom Ford Tobacco Oud — slightly less boozy and less dark, without the incense, making it a great alternative given Tobacco Oud's discontinued status, with mentions of Creed Royal Oud, Straight to Heaven, and Aesop Marrakech Intense. A polarizing release — edgy, absolutely not mass-appeal, and should be worn with a healthy dose of self-confidence — but as a decant it's an easy and risk-free try for those drawn to boozy, woody compositions with genuine character.
